Summer 2009 Art Classes
The Kimball Art Center
Little Picassos (ages 1 ½ - 3)
Bring your little ones to the Kimball Art Center to meet and make friends while experimenting with color, texture, and various art media. The focus in these classes is for children to explore art, not on a finished product. A parent or guardian must accompany their Little Picassos in the class. Space is limited. Art Explorer

Watch as your Little Picasso explores a variety of different art media, from markers and crayons to paints, stamps and other mixed media supplies like puzzle pieces and pasta. Tots (Ages 3 – 4)
Tots’ classes are offered for children ages 3 – 4 and classes introduce students to a simple classroom setting with a quick introduction and directions in the beginning of each class. Classes are offered to help children develop their fine motor skills and experiment with color, texture and patterns while building their imagination. The focus of these classes is to start children with instructions and see what they can make with a little parental and instructor guidance. Mixed Media Collage

Using recyclable media, students create paper collages by choosing from a variety of patterns and then filling in the shapes in a paint-by-number method with recycled papers. Space is limited. Registration deadline is 4 days prior to the first day of class.

Due to the 40th Annual Kimball Arts Festival, the Kimball Art Center will not hold classes August 3 though August 9, 2009. Spiro Arts is offering a children’s sculpture class with Sante Fe artist Sarah Hewitt. In the class, students ages 8 – 15. Children learn the art of storytelling through the creation of life-size woven characters and other props such as people, pets, wild animals, trucks and other everyday objects. The workshop will begin with a fable written by the group. Children will then select characters and settings from the story and create them out of recycled basketry/weaving materials. Newspaper, cloth, grasses, plastic bags, yarns and twines will be transformed onto a "family”. In this two day workshop artist Kimberly Roush teaches students how to create realistic self portraits. Kimberly Roush has many years experience teaching drawing. She has been instrumental in helping students develop drawing skills and portfolios which successfully gained them acceptance into major visual art universities, such as The Rhode Island School of Design.

Adult Classes are offered over the course of 4– 6 weeks and are slower paced (less intense) than workshops. Classes are great for beginning to advanced level students. The Kimball Art Center offers a wide variety of both classes and workshops for the busy adult schedule, during evenings and day time hours. There is always an artistic adventure awaiting you at the Kimball from pottery, painting and photography, to stained glass and silver jewelry. Artist Bruce Larrabee teaches students how to throw pottery on the wheel and learn how to from various shapes. Students also experiment with various glazing techniques. Design and create your own sterling silver charm bracelet and unique charms. This class is for beginners and intermediate students who want to brush up on their basic skills. The class begins with the foundations of jewelry fabrication: piercing, sawing, filing, sanding, soldering, texturing, and forming. Advanced techniques of chain making, bezel stone setting, and construction of 3 types of charms will be covered the second half of the class. Come to the first class ready to explore the world of silver smithing and have fun. Bring your sketchbook and charm ideas. Class supplies include all materials for completing one sterling silver bracelet with up to 3 charms with bezel set stones. Space is limited. Students will transform a book, old or new, into their own personal work of art. Students bring new life to the pages through paints, old ticket stubs, family letters & photos, stamping, embellishments, quotes, journaling and more. The class begins by using children’s board books, turning them into a works of art. All ability levels are welcome. Please allow 1 week minimum prior to class to gather materials, many which are found treasures around the house, thrift stores, and second-hand shops, as well as a few basic art supplies. Relief printing is a medium capable of both great graphic power and a unique subtlety with the ability to produce both black-and-white and multi-colored prints. It demands good design and brave drawing. For this introductory class students discuss basic relief printing techniques through the cutting of linoleum blocks while working in black-and-white. Precious Metal Clay

Create a unique sliver ring without needing expensive equipment or technical skills! On the first day of class, make an open-ended ring from 99.9% pure silver clay, adding texture from objects you bring or available in class. Instructor, Carol Avery, will fire it overnight and bring to the second session. Finish your ring with polishing and close it with wire to assure good fit, embellishing with one or more fancy glass beads. Your unique piece is sure to grab attention from your friends! Students should bring a pencil and note pad to class. Students may also bring various items for texturing such as pinecones, rocks, and things from around the house, although some materials will be provided in class. Students may bring their own glass beads that are 1/4 - 3/8 inch in diameter, or purchase glass beads for $1 from the instructor. Carol also provides instructional brochures and resources to take home. Precious Metal Clay will be available for purchase from the instructor, one bag is required for the class, but students may purchase more for $25 per bag if they would like. Students may also purchase a personal tool kit for $40, but this is not required, students will be provided with community tool kits during the class. Space is limited. Students will transform a book, old or new, into their own personal work of art. Students bring new life to the pages through paints, old ticket stubs, family letters & photos, stamping, embellishments, quotes, journaling and more. The class begins by using children’s board books, turning them into a works of art. All ability levels are welcome. Material list will be provided at time of registration. Please allow 1 week minimum prior to class to gather materials, including found treasures around the house, thrift stores, and second-hand shops, as well as a few basic art supplies. Learn how to use the new mini art canvases to create your own 3-dimensional wall art. This class will investigate the method of a Xerox copy transfer. Using non-toxic materials students learn how to transfer a Xeroxed image onto another surface. This is a great way for artists of other mediums to incorporate printmaking methods into their work. Bring Xerox copies which you wish to transfer with you. These must be toner based (heat set) and not inkjet or any other water-based type of copies or the process wont work. A copy store like Kinko's or Staples will be able to help you with this. Space is limited. Registration deadline is 5 days prior to the first day of class.

Building on a command of the basic techniques used in Linoleum Block Printing, this class will explore the incorporation of color into your prints. Using the method of color reduction (also called a suicide print) students learn to create bright, bold and graphic pieces of art. Space is limited. Whether you are in Park City for 2 days, 2 months, or as a permanent resident, the Kimball Art Center can offer a mini-class designed to fit your interests. A minimum of six students is required, and class is pending the availability of the instructor. You provide the students and we provide the instructor and studio space. The cost is based on the number of instructional hours requested.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Unless otherwise noted, courses and workshops are limited to 10 students. Only those who have paid tuition and registration fees will be permitted to attend workshops and courses. Prompt registration reduces the possibility that a course might be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.
CANCELLATION/REFUNDS
Occasionally the Kimball Art Center may find it necessary to cancel a course or workshop due to low enrollment or other scheduling conflicts. All classes require a minimum of four students unless otherwise noted. Class enrollment will be assessed 4 days prior to class beginning. If cancellation is necessary, registered students will be contacted and allowed to transfer to another course or be refunded the full course tuition and any additional fees.
Students will receive a full refund of tuition if a written request to withdraw is received by the Kimball Art Center no later than 7 days prior to the first session. Please email your request to withdraw to education@kimball-art.org. Requests to withdraw from a course less than 7 days prior to the first class session will receive a 50% tuition refund.Students who withdraw on or after the first class day will not be eligible for tuition refunds or class credit. The Kimball Art Center reserves the right to accept or deny enrollment in any class, lecture, or workshop by any applicant. Class sizes are limited to 10 students unless otherwise noted.
CLASS CREDIT
If a student chooses to cancel a class or workshop after the refund period (7 days prior to the first day of the class or workshop), the Kimball issues a class credit and reduces compensation by 50%. Class credits are only used toward class fees at the Kimball Art Center. They cannot be used towards materials fees or any other purchases of goods at the Kimball Art Center. All class credits expire a year from the date they are issued. No class credits are issued for students who cancel on or after the first day of class.

I understand and agree that when I register, I have obligated myself to pay for the courses and all other charges related to this registration. If registering by bank card, I authorize Kimball Art Center to charge my account the amount noted. If I decide to cancel my registration, I understand that the date I officially withdraw will determine the amount of refund, if any, I will receive.
