Winter Art Class Schedule November - December 2008



The Kimball Art Center offers a variety of classes for tots, kids, teens and adults, along with workshops and new cross-generational classes for parents and children. Sign up now to reserve your spot in class, spaces fill quickly and class sizes are limited. All students are responsible for their own materials and fees associated with the classes. Material fees are an estimate of how much supplies will cost. Sign up 10 days in advance of the first day of class to receive a discount off your art class!


Little Picassos (ages 1 ½ - 3)

Bring your little ones into the Kimball Art Center to meet and make friends while exploring and experimenting with color, texture and different art media for the first time. All parents must accompany their Little Picassos in the class. Register your little ones in this class today. Space is limited and classes fill up quickly.

Print and Paint

Little Picassos will experiment with different colors of paint using brushes and their little hands. See what happens when you add texture, mix colors, and make prints. Stimulate your child's imagination with this fun, interactive class.

Bring your Little Picasso for this special winter themed class. In this mixed media class, children will make their first holiday related keepsake craft using paint, glitter, glue, crayons and more. There will be many different tools to create colors and texture to capture their attention.

Tots (ages 3 - 5)

Tots' classes are offered for children ages 3 - 5 to introduce them to art and develop their fine motor skills. Children will experiment with color, build their imagination and try new media. Parents or a guardian must accompany tots in the class. Register today, space is limited!

Turkey Time Crafts

Come into the Kimball and make a fun Thanksgiving craft with your little one! This class is offered in the evening for the working parents.

Tots Making Pots

Bring your little one and learn how to make pottery. Experiment with textures, colors and more. If you have taken this class before, we introduce a different project every time so come have fun with us again!

Tots will create keepsake winter themed crafts. In this mixed media class, students will experiment with paint, glue, glitter and more.

Kids (Ages 6 - 12)

The Kimball Art Center offers a wide variety of classes such including, sculpture, painting, drawing and more for kids. Kids' classes are for children between the ages of 6 to 12 and all ability levels. Get creative and have fun using your imagination.


Jewelry for Kids *(7 +)

Students will learn techniques such as beading and braiding. Students will create their own beads and charms, and then assemble jewelry pieces such as bracelets, barrettes and necklaces. Clay for Kids

Students will learn hand-building techniques including pinch pots, coil pots and slab pots. Students will use these skills and their imagination while creating beautiful works of art. Get messy, make friends and let your imagination soar to new heights.

Teens & Tweens (11 - 18)

Classes for teens are for students who want to explore and excel in the arts. Students must be mature about subject matter and be ready to learn.

Soap and Candle Making

In this two day class, learn how to make your own scented candles and soaps. Candles and soaps make great gifts to give to your friends and family or you can use what you create to relax after cramming for exams.


Intergenerational Family Fun (all ages)

Come in after school and create fun winter crafts. Art projects are a great way to create one-of-a-kind gifts and give them to your friends and family. Winter Workshops filled quickly last year so register today! Remember if you sign up at least 10 days prior to the class start date you will receive an extra $5 off! Parents are not required to stay unless children are 5 and under.

Mixed Media Card and Ornament Making

Make cards and ornaments by hand to decorate your home. Cards and ornaments will be created out of everything from paper and paint to glitter and recycled materials.

Holiday Cookie Plates

Students will collage to create their very own holiday plate. This fun holiday mixed media project is sure to leave Santa smiling and you with what you wished for this holiday season. Plates are glass and will last for years to come!

Gingerbread Houses

Gingerbread Houses were one of our most popular Winter Workshops last year. This year we are offering this sweet creative treat again! Students will get their hands sticky digging into frosting, graham crackers, gum drops and more. Create a traditional house or show us what you can sculpt.

Polar Express

Local author of The Tao of Rudy, Corrine Humphrey, will read a classic Holiday Story, The Polar Express. Afterwards, children will create Polar Express Bells and Candy Cane Reindeer. The activity includes cookies from Patti Cakes Bakery and hot cocoa. Come into the Kimball for this special winter craft. All ages are welcome. Parents will have the opportunity to purchase signed The Tao of Rudy books from the author.


Adults (18 +)

The Kimball Art Center offers classes for adults of all ages to learn about and build upon their knowledge of art. Take a class or a workshop and watch your technique improve. There is truly an artist in everyone. Please carefully read the materials information. The procedure for materials varies between classes.

Sharpen your drawing skills this winter. Learn how to draw the nude figure, as well as still life. This comprehensive 4 week class will touch on proportions, perspective, gesture, triangulation and light and shadow.

Mixed Media Painting

Salt Lake City artist Kim Massaro leads the class in exploring many art media. Students will create drawings with charcoal and sharpies from nude models and incorporate them into large paintings. All materials will be provided in this class. Students can take as many of the classes as they would like. Each class is $75.00 and all materials will be provided.

Digital Photography

This class is for the beginning photographer who wants to develop a sound base of fundamental techniques and understandings. Explore the fundamentals of light in-camera by controlling I.S.O., shutter speed and aperture. Students will also explore exposure and composition. Students are responsible for providing their own digital camera.

Create your own original jewelry with Precious Metal Clay (PMC), fine silver particles imbedded in organic clay. The clay is shaped, formed, textured and rolled, and will fired at high temperatures to create a solid silver form. Beginning and advanced techniques will cover texturing, molding, layering, stone setting and finishing. This workshop is for anyone who wants to create beautiful silver jewelry, have fun experimenting and get results immediately. All levels welcome, no experience necessary.

Silver Smith: Etching & Patina

Form a pendant necklace by creating and etching stamped metal pieces and rivet them together. Students will learn how to cut, drill and file metal. Etch metal, make cold connections (rivets), and create patinas. Class is limited to 8.

Silver Smith: Fabrication

Design and create your own sterling silver pendant with bezel set stone. Learn the foundations of jewelry fabrication: piercing, texturing, soldering, bezel forming, stone setting, design and function. No previous experience necessary, come ready to learn and explore the world of metal smithing. Class is limited to 8.

This mother/daughter team teaches you how to create great gifts such as salts, scrubs, fizzies, lotions, salves and body butters for you and all your friends this holiday season. Students will learn the steps to make wonderful spa-at-home bath treatments using local Great Salt Lake Salt, sought after around the world. Learn the steps to make yummy, skin loving treatments with all natural botanical ingredients that can be custom-blended for any skin type. This class is sure to leave you smelling sweet.

Knitting for Beginners

*Materials are listed in the class description below. They will not be for purchase at the Kimball Art Center.

In this one-day workshop, learn to cast-on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, read a pattern and start a simple project. Students will need a light colored ball of yarn in any medium weight with a pair of knitting needles (preferably wood or bamboo) in an appropriate size for the yarn. Students may also bring specific patterns that they are interested in. However, the teacher will also have patterns to use in class. Class is limited to 8.

William Morris: Native Species

Join us on Thursday, December 4, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. for a special viewing of William Morris’s extraordinary glass sculptures.  Then follow us to the Treasure Mountain Inn for a viewing of Creative Nature, a film by John Andres.  John Andres will introduce the film at 7:30 pm. and then participate in a question and answer session after.  View the movie trailer at http://www.creativenaturefilm.com/trailer.htm.  Admission is $5 at the Kimball Art Center front desk and includes the above activities and light refreshments.  



Classes on Demand

Whether you are in Park City for 2 days, 2 months, or as a permanent resident, the Kimball Art Center can offer a mini-class designed to fit your interests. A minimum of six students is required, and class is pending the availability of the instructor. You provide the students and we provide the instructor and studio space. The cost is based on the number of instructional hours requested.

Unless otherwise noted, courses and workshops are limited to 10 students. Only those who have paid tuition and registration fees will be permitted to attend workshops and courses. Prompt registration reduces the possibility that a course might be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.

CANCELLATION POLICY

CANCELLATION/REFUNDS
Occasionally the Kimball Art Center may find it necessary to cancel a course or workshop due to low enrollment or other scheduling conflicts. All classes require a minimum of four students unless otherwise noted. Class enrollment will be assessed 7 days prior to class beginning. If cancellation is necessary, registered students will be contacted and allowed to transfer to another course or be refunded the full course tuition and any additional fees.

Students will receive a full refund of tuition if a written request to withdraw is received by the Kimball Art Center no later than 7 days prior to the first session. Please email your request to withdraw to education@kimball-art.org . Requests to withdraw from a course less than 7 days prior to the first class session will receive a 50% tuition refund. Students who withdraw on or after the first class day will not be eligible for tuition refunds or class credits. Class credits may be issued instead of a refund and in this case they must be used with in a year.

The Kimball Art Center reserves the right to accept or deny enrollment in any class, lecture, or workshop by any applicant. Class sizes are limited to 10 students unless otherwise noted.

I understand and agree that when I register, I have obligated myself to pay for the courses and all other charges related to this registration. If registering by bank card, I authorize Kimball Art Center to charge my account the amount noted. If I decide to cancel my registration, I understand that the date I officially withdraw will determine the amount of refund, if any, I will receive.
